“Everyman” Joseph Taylor, Jr. (Joe) is born to a middle-class family in small town America. The son of a doctor and an intelligent student with a promising future, Joe marries the love of his youth and accepts a high-profile position at a Chicago hospital to support himself and his wife, Jennie, during the Depression. Hardships with Jennie and unhappiness with big city life help Joe realize his missteps in life and spur his move back home to become a small-town doctor.
